Ben’s Chili Bowl: A DC Establishment

Have you ever heard of Ben’s Chili Bowl? The first time I was introduced to this magical place was when I read about it over at the Ginger Side of Life. That was in October of last year and I took my first trip to DC in November. We were only there for a short weekend and we didn’t make it over to Ben’s. Now that we’re here for the summer, I knew it would be one of the first stops. Plus, you can always count Ivan in for chili dogs.1

Anyways, Ben’s is kind of a landmark. Well, I guess it technically is? Everyone loves Ben’s – Barrack Obama, Bill Cosby, Larry King, Hilary Clinton and of course, me. It was also featured on two travel channel shows – “Man Vs. Food” and “No Reservations”.

The menu is pretty simple – you got things like burgers, fries and hot dogs smothered in chili. Just got with it. Put chili on everything. I promise, it’s fantastic.  They also have “healthy options” which mostly consists of vegetarian chili & turkey burger replacements. There is also a breakfast menu, but we went at night, so I can’t really comment on that.

I had the “Ben’s Famous All Meat Chili Dog” (chili, mustard, onions) and chili cheese fries. Don’t judge. The chili has a great spice to it – I went through my pop pretty fast. Oh well, that’s the way it should be.


If you’re in the DC area, I’d suggest you check this joint out. It’s pretty affordable and delicious. Plus, it’s just plain fun.

They are opening a new location right down the street from us, so hopefully it will open before we leave!
