H54F: Memorial Day & More Exploring

1. National Memorial Day Parade
On monday Ivan and I walked down to see the National Memorial Day Parade. I can’t remember ever going to a Memorial Day Parade before, so I thought that I might as well start big. There was quite the crowd and everyone was in such a fantastic mood. The parade featured a lot of different marching bands (even some HS ones I think), floats, troops, & cars with veterans. That was easily my favorite part of the parade – when the Vets would drive by and wave.

4 2 There was also a float shaped like a giant potato. Because why not.1

2. Dinner on H Street
On Tuesday night we went tried out a new place down the street. We had dinner at this fantastic little Mexican restaurant, SOL Mexican Grill. They actually have 2 restaurants, a sit down place upstairs and then a quick-serve place downstairs. At least, that’s what I gathered. Apparently they have $2 tacos every Tuesday downstairs, so we’re going to check that out next week. We ate in the sit down restaurant this time and everything was fantastic. My favorite was the “elotes locos” – which is street corn. We had it for an appetizer and it was AH-mazing. IMG_75743. Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception
On Thursday, I headed down to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. That’s a mouth full, right? Anyways, it’s the largest Catholic Church in the United States and was pretty freaking cool. I’m going to have a full post of it early next week. We’re going to visit the National Cathedral on Sunday, because they charge you admission during the week. I’m pretty excited to check that one out too.
2 14. Goodwill Hunting
You guys know how much I love Goodwill. Well I went to two different DC area Goodwill’s this week and I struck GOLD at both. I picked up with quite a few pieces. I spent less than $50 and got 3 dresses, a button up shirt, 2 skirts and a lightweight sweater… including this beauty. It still needs to be pressed and dry cleaned, but I only paid $8.99 for it. It retailed for $128. I’ll take it.

5. Back to Cooking
I’ve gotten back into the swing of making dinner. I haven’t really done it since we’ve been in DC – it’s been a lot of takeout and a lot of sandwiches. It’s nice to finally settle into a routine and have a home cooked meal together.

  1. Ok, so your comment about the parade and everyone being in a great mood – I totally thought that was sarcastic at first. We have to go (well, kinda) to this local parade every summer and it’s at like 4:00 in the afternoon, always blazing hot and the only thing I can ever think of is how miserable it is. But obviously that wasn’t your experience, so yay! And what a steal on that dress! It’s gorgeous! Good job on the dinner routine – I need to get back into it.

    1. hahah yeah, every other parade I’ve been too has been like that. Nobody REALLY wants to be there, but everyone was cheering and happy and smiling.. even though everyone was sweating up a storm lol. And thanks! I LOVE that dress, I can’t wait to wear it.

  2. So glad to hear you’re settling in to the DC life! It would be so awesome to see a Memorial Day parade in DC. How cool. And I can imagine there are so many cool restaurants to try! I’d have a hard time keeping up with cooking myself. Hope you had a wonderful weekend and got a chance to go to the National Cathedral! It’s gorgeous too!
