Last Thursday night I attended Ultimate Painting at the Loft. It was the first time I’d ever heard of this event and my friend Maurica invited me to tag along with her. It’s a timed painting competition in which the audience votes on the winners. You can also bid on the pieces in a silent auction on your phone.
There were 3 different rounds; each with 12 painters. We stayed for the first two rounds, but because we’re too old ladies, we left before the third. It was a weeknight after all.
Each contestant is given the same palette to start with. They are allowed to bring their own brushes and tools, but no mechanical devices (so no spray paint). Each round is 20 minutes long and when the timer stops, they need to be finished.
I have to say, I was very impressed with the whole thing. I’ve never been to anything quite like it before. It was amazing what people could accomplish in 20 minutes. I’ve never been able to paint and to think that artists can come up with a complete composition within such a small time frame is astonishing.
If this sounds like a fun night out or you’d like to participate, you can find more information at ultimatepainting.com.
